The Following is almost the letter I sent after a very very horrid incident , where I was treated like the innocents are in a totalitarian dictatorship at the U of A. I am ashamed to say the Univeristy of Alberta now, because of this incident , which caused me to write this letter. . .

“To whomever, specifically those at the board of governors of the University of Alberta, and the president of the University of Alberta.

I have already phoned Erin Chursch (492 4241) about this, and phone the governors office at 492 4951. the students union executive, the U of A president, the Elections office at 496 8008, how I Dave Dowling a
Candidate for Mayor, was invited by mail to the students union building to campaign at a table in the SU building. I am no student, but a person who knows what their rights and freedoms are. Alex Abboud signed the invitation that was sent to me by mail. After phoning Erin Chrusch, to confirm this, Erin told me there would be a table there, and I could just come in on thursday, and use that table all day.

I showed up at the SU building on Thursday Oct 14 at approx 8 am. And set up at the table assigned to me. No one supplied with me with or told me of a copy of any rules, regulations or stupid rituals that must be observed while in the SU building, when you are invited in to it to campaign.

At approx 11 am a female, came to me and said I was not allowed to stand up for democracy and hand flyers out to people in that building. She did not identify herself, nor did she show me any badge or papers of authority, with rules, regulations, and stupid rituals. When I refused to listen to her, a few minutes later, 2 security guards with two other people came over and said I was breaking some regulation or rule or ritual or something, even though no one would show me the written regulation or rule or law or ritual I was suppose to be violating. Only one of the two security guards out of the four people actually showed me identification. Two of the people said they represented the University.

I was then told to leave the building as I would not sit down to hand out flyers.

I am disabled, I can not sit for extended periods of time in such rickity
chairs. My rights were not just violated, but crudely stomped upon. Your
people, (two security guards, two supposed administration,) tried to
curtail my Freedom of Expression as guaranteed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. They tried to force me to do something I can not physically do, and they did it all in complete disreguard for my reputation in front of
at least 200 people. This happened after approx, two hours of standing up for democracy and handing out flyers in that same location.

Once we were outside of the building, Your security guard by the name of
[given concerns over Webboard and defamation, I’m deleting the gentleman’s name, even though I can’t see how including it would be defamatory any more than I see Defeat Jung-Suk Ryu! is] did physically assault me by grabbing my arm most roughly, for no reason, I was not placed under arrest, He had no right whatsoever to physically reached out and assaulted me, by grabbing my arm. I was already out of the building, protesting agasnst the abuse of my rights, my body and the law, while waiting for a vehicle. Hours later as I write this my back, hand and leg are still hurting.

He then told me I had to walk off campus which is blocks from where we
were. I have disabilities and can not walk great distances, so I refused. It is tourcher to try and make a disabled person do something their disabilities do not allow them to do. This is the dispickable acts that [NAME WITHHELD – same security officer as above] and the three others tried to do to me, after assaulting me. In complete disreguard for me, my rights and freedoms, the charter of rights and freedoms, the laws of Canada, and the Laws of the United Nations which clearly state that signatory nations will not allow people of authority to commit tourcher, they did so from thier supposed position of authority of representing the University of Alberta. An organization I am thouroughly disgusted with at this moment.

I almost had to scream at [NAME WITHHELD – same security officer as above] and the other security guard to get them to quit verbally assaulting me.

Rick Evans then proceeded to tell me that I am banned forever more from
the University of Alberta Campus in total violation of Election law. Banned
from a place where there is residences.

It dosent matter if your SU building is private or public, the charter of rights and freedoms does not stop where your property starts. The charter applies to ALL of Canada. If your Student Union council or whatever they
are named, people get on your campus radio station, which I believe is called cjsr radio for 15 minutes this weekend during prime time, and spend that 15 minutes firstly appologising to me, Dave Dowling,Candidate for Mayor and meaning it, appologizing with actual sorrow for what was done in thier voices, then reading the charter of rights and freedoms on air, and then if any time is left in that 15 minutes to read my platform on air, I will be satisfied, and will take no futher action on this.

I would also like you people to confirm by reply before the end of today, and in Writing as to weather I am allowed on your campus property or not.

Yes that is what happened.
The U of A people have never ever contacted me in any, whay, shape, or form to appologize for this. I suppose it is because the U of A teaches students there to never apologize for any wrong they do. Plato must be banned there; I would suppose.
In My Opinion it is wrong.
They should have humbly appoligized for infringing upon the rights and freedoms of someone they invited to campaign there.

And then for the righty winged icing on the facist u of a cake the y tried to tell me to eat (“Let them eat cake! ” it is how they acted In My Opinion when I decided to tell them all, “My rights and freedoms, like freedom of expression, and freedom to communicate, you can not stomp upon )

They start posting the rabid cyberstallking spewcake here and there upon the net.

Through my nefarious connections I was able to obtain the following e-mail from Dave Dowling, my personal favourite mayoral candidate, and CJSR:

Now, the rather questionable grammar and FLQ-ish tone aside, I do have a couple of questions:

1. I presume from this that mayoral candidate have been invited to set up tables in SUB (presumably free). This is good. Are they, at that time, made aware of the rules by which they must abide, as anybody else booking a table would be?

2. If somebody booking a table requests to be shown a copy of the regulation governing table use, are they permitted to see one?

By Mr. Dowling’s own account it appears that he acted rather irrationally and unduly confrontationally, and I don’t doubt that S.U. staff were quite justified in involving Campus Security in kicking him out of the building. Still, though, people have rights, and I’d like to be sure that the S.U. is upholding them.

Yes, I know – the Charter applies only to the State. But, as I said, glaring inaccuracies in Mr. Dowling’s tirade aside, it does bring up some legitimate questions, and it would be nice to have them answered.

I have to admit that that was a thoroughly entertaining piece of writing to read. And I do think that it makes sense that people who are allowed to use a table in SUB be given a set of the rules to follow. It would prevent possible incidents like Dowling was involved in.

Also, wasn’t there an incident a couple of years ago when a student group got in a confrontation with SU staff, when they started handing out samples of vegetarian chili? (I have a lousy memory and can’t remember all of the details)

Steve, to answer your questions:

1. All of the mayoral candidates and Ward 4 councillor candidates were invited to “sit at a table” in SUB – at no cost – to inform prospective voters of that candidate’s campaign platform. In hindsight, that was probably too ambiguous and, unfortunately, candidates were not provided with a list of the regulations. However, it should be noted that other candidates (Tilo Parvalos, for one) had tables set up the two days prior to this incident and there were no problems at all.

2. As I understand it, Alex made several offers to provide Mr. Dowling with the regulations, but Mr. Dowling refused to listen. If Mr. Dowling had asked to see a copy of the regulations, we would have provided him with one.

Yes.

I think Dieter Peske is in SUB today, if anyone wants to go meet a grouchy drycleaner!

Yep. As I recall, we responded to it by amending policy such that anybody renting a table was to be shown a copy of the regulations in advance. I’m not sure if that policy has been subsequently re-amended or not.

I rather suspected as much – thanks Erin.

About the only one who had anything resmebling brillance to write was: Scott Abbey

from his Undisclosed Bomb Shelter:

Which I can understand from the way I was treated there by the fascists scums in charge.
Fascism is where they say you have no rights and you must bow to thier corporations.
scums are those that try to inforce such vileness upon innocents like me.

Yes, even the slandering Erin Chrusch, had some slander to spew with the ” As I understand it, Alex made several offers to provide Mr. Dowling with the regulations, but Mr. Dowling refused to listen. If Mr. Dowling had asked to see a copy of the regulations, we would have provided him with one”

which is outright slanderous hearsay, no matter how you diescet it or splice it. I certainly asked that day, where oh where is the law that says I must sit like a trained dog upon command? I know I asked that Question at least twice.
Yes, this is the reason that I Dave Dowling will never ever attend any debate at the University of Alberta, nor have anything to do with them in any way, shape, or form:

Untill that day that will probably never ever come, where they actually appoligize. In writting.

And that In My Opinion is something that would take a christmas miracle or something to make happen.
